Wear it Purple day reflections

Wear it Purple day marks a history of resilience, advocacy, and the long-earned road to visibility. In celebration, I was grateful to attend the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network Rainbow Futures Forum. It is no surprise that the health space is often a negator for queer and gender diverse wellbeing, especially where informed staff and policies are limited. Bringing together experts in practice and lived experience, this forum tapped into topics beyond my expectations. Discussions of religion, gender affirming care, navigating family dynamics, and holistic healthcare were thoughtfully engaged with, amplified by the lived experience of queer and transgender youth.

When we think about inclusion in such a vulnerable environment, knowing that champions exist to deliver tailored, person-centred care is a comfort. We also acknowledge the ongoing need for protections for LGBTQIA+ communities in health settings, recognising equally patients, staff, and families. Sydney Children's Hospitals Network demonstrates a strong commitment to queer safety, and for this I commend their efforts. Thank you to those who have gotten us this far, and for those who continue to advocate for us.
